The Harvard Band
Foundation
The
Harvard Band
Foundation (HBF) is a non-profit organization of marching band, jazz
band, and Wind Ensemble alumni providing financial support and
mentoring to the Harvard University Bands. HBF has existed in its
present incarnation for over twenty-five
years
and assists the Bands through annual grants from its endowment. The
endowment is
professionally invested by Crosby Advisors, a group within Fidelity
that
invests the personal wealth of Fidelity’s controlling shareholders, as
well as funds from thirty-five New England-based charitable
organizations. Every year, HBF contributes up to 5% of the
endowment to the Bands. These
contributions are made against specific
grant requests, which are vetted through a rigorous process by the
Foundation’s
Grants Committee.
Over the last ten years, grants have totaled nearly $300,000 and have
been
used to:
- Purchase and repair instruments
- Underwrite band jacket purchases for new bandies
who attend a specified number of fall events
- Secure arranging and performing rights for
student arrangements of popular songs
- Purchase computers, music arranging software, and
audio-visual equipment
- Buy arrangements and fund commissions for the
marching band, jazz bands, and Wind Ensemble
- Fund the marching band’s travel to playoff
games and other special events
- Contribute to professional development
opportunities for the band directors
